John W. Murphy, CBA
John W. Murphy is the founder and president of Atlantic Management Company. He has been providing financial and management consulting services to a broad range of clients for over 30 years with a concentration in business valuation and ownership transition services, including succession planning and exit strategies for business owners.
Mr. Murphy is a nationally recognized expert in business valuation and has been awarded the designation of Certified Business Appraiser. He conducts valuations in connection with business succession, employee stock ownership plans, estate and gift tax matters, marital dissolution, and mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures. He has extensive experience rendering fairness opinions and solvency opinions, conducting inter-company transfer pricing studies, and valuing intellectual property and intangible assets. He has been accepted as an expert witness in Federal Court and in the courts of New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, and New York, and has served as a court appointed expert in the resolution of business valuation disputes.
Mr. Murphy has been involved in a wide variety of ownership transition transactions including ESOPs, management buyouts, mergers and acquisitions, and family business transfers. He was an early proponent of the employee ownership concept and is recognized for his expertise in that area. Whether representing buyer or seller, he has structured and negotiated leveraged buyouts and merger and acquisition transactions in the private and public sectors.
As the senior principal in a family owned firm, Mr. Murphy is a valuable resource to family businesses and has facilitated ownership transitions in many of New England’s prominent family owned companies.
Mr. Murphy conducts seminars and workshops for business owners, attorneys, accountants, bankers, and trade associations throughout New England. He also is a guest lecturer at regional universities and for representatives of the Internal Revenue Service. Mr. Murphy is also called upon to write articles that are widely published in professional journals and business magazines.
He holds memberships in the Institute of Business Appraisers, the American Society of Appraisers, The ESOP Association, and the National Center for Employee Ownership. Prior to establishing Atlantic Management Company in 1968, Mr. Murphy held management positions with Fortune 500 companies. He received a BSEE from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from New York University.
